The Lady Fighting Scots host Serrano today in the match to decide the Mojave River League title. Serrano beat Rim earlier 3-0. This time around the Scots will try to seek a little revenge on their home court. Rim has won or shared the title every year they have been in the league.

Serrano leads the league after the first round of action with a 4-0 mark. They lost two of their middle blockers last week. Amanda Gates was injured and lost for the season. Gates was a force in the middle as she recorded 14 blocks and 11 digs in their win against Rim in the first round. Without Gates, the Scots’ chances are better when the two teams meet today at Rim.

The Fighting Scots football team was up for their game against defending Mojave River League champion Serrano last Friday. Rim was on the road for the third week in a row. In many respects, Rim played their best game of the year but turnovers were costly in their 33-0 loss. Thursday’s game was much closer than the score indicated.

The Scots won the coin toss and deferred to Serrano, who chose to receive. Rim Coach Bobby Gradillas chose to kick a squibbler on the ground in an effort to stop the Diamondbacks from a long runback. The plan didn't work as Serrano returned the ball to their 49-yard line.

The Rim defense was ready for the challenge. Earlier in the week, they got Mohawk haircuts which were in vogue when the Scots won league in 2006. The defense held. After the punt, the offense took over. They moved the ball with a couple of nice runs by junior tailback Nick Toner, but stalled at their 30-yard line.

The Lady Fighting Scots opened league play losing to Serrano 3-0 on Tuesday. This put a lot of pressure on the Rim girls as they hosted dangerous Sultana on Thursday.

Their five-game victory (25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-2) was especially sweet as they keep alive their hopes of winning an unprecedented ninth consecutive Mojave River League title.

Going into the fifth and deciding game, visions of last year's five-game match, won by Rim, came to mind. But unlike last year’s match, this fifth game was a blowout, with Rim winning 15-2.

The Scots trailed 0-1 before running off 10 straight points as the Lady Sultans came apart at the seams. Junior Ashley Neale came through with the big match-winning kill, giving the Scots the win. She was very emotional after the victory.

“Oh, my gosh! I put everything into that hit,” said Neale. “I can't even explain it. It felt so good.”

Rim was led by high-flying senior outside hitter and team captain Janine Lawler, who had 17 kills and 20 digs. Neale was also on as she contributed 16 kills and 6 blocks. Cheyenne Crisp played well, with 5 blocks and 4 kills.
